Maintenance Supervisor/Manager

A global leader in its field is looking to supplement its management team with a Maintenance Supervisor in a permanent role in the Smethwick/Oldbury area of the West Midlands.

Applicants do not have to have worked in the exact sector or field as the hiring company but instead will bring the required transferable supervisory and/or managerial skills that the business seeks (see job spec). If you have worked in a Shift/Team Leader, Shift Supervisor/Manager or QHSE Manager role in the industrial or manufacturing sectors then you may have the attributes sought.

This employer will also invest in externally recognised managerial qualifications to up skill the successful candidate.

Working as a key member of the Maintenance Team, the successful applicant will organise resource to drive efficient and effective utilisation of all personnel, plant and equipment through supervision of the maintenance personnel and the allocation of work to them against set plans and reactive maintenance in regards to breakdowns.

Responsibilities will include ensuring compliance in all areas to meet QSHE standards, and promoting a safe working environment to company employees as well as external contractors working on site.

The post holder will also need to promote and encourage teamwork and flexibility and promote integration and a team ethic between maintenance and production departments. The role incumbent will take action to continually improve performance, manage equipment issues and deal with day to day HR issues communicating clearly across departments.

Key Responsibilities:
• Ensure all employees/contractors/visitors are following the safe working practices as detailed in company HS&E procedures
• Ensure all employees/contractors/visitors are wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Investigate, review and report all accidents and near misses in accordance with company guidelines and take necessary action to prevent reoccurrences.
• Monitoring of maintenance performance by shift and taking necessary action to respond to variations, monitor KPI’s and achieve set targets and goals.
• Problem solving, breakdown resolution, troubleshooting liaising with Management and the Planning Coordinator to agree plans and recovery plans where appropriate.
• Ensuring that performance metrics are maintained and details/changes highlighted for daily reviews.
• Working with the coordinator, management and contractors to ensure that plant and equipment is maintained/replaced to set timelines, understand issues, report and resolve concerns.
• Ensure TPM Audits are conducted by team members, manage temporary countermeasures and escalate concerns
• Report and manage abnormal situations, taking countermeasures to return to normal conditions promptly
• Involvement, implementation and monitoring of continuous improvement initiatives. This includes short, medium and long-term plans to be continually assessed and updated to meet agreed timelines.
• Monitoring of team member timekeeping and attendance and conduct return to work interviews
• Identification of training requirements and ensuring their team are suitably skilled and authorised to perform their duties
• Management of area team including break management and effective utilisation of time during plant downtime, by agreeing and liaising with the Planning Coordinator, management and contractors.
• Ensure all areas achieve the defined standard, through co-ordination of the team and conducting housekeeping audits and that the team apply these rules by clearing away tools, etc. after work has been completed and the areas are left in the correct manner.
• On-boarding new team members

Key Deliverables:
• Training and development of their team to multi-skill and encourage growth and career progression
• Ensure adherence to safe working procedures (SWPs) and continuously review SWPs.
• Ensure all daily and periodic checks are complete including safety and environmental issues.
• Ensuring new starters in area are familiar with standard/safe operating procedures and that training records are maintained for team
• Completion of departmental performance monitoring and KPI data capture
• Work with team members to ensure that all machine defects are captured and actioned
• With the planning coordinator and maintenance personnel create and maintain essential spares by use of agreed systems such as KANBAN to ensure there are zero instances of downtime due to non-availability of essential spares and consumables.
• Liaise with maintenance team on plant issue resolution
• Ensure good housekeeping standards are met and relevant PPE is worn
• Ensure safe isolation of machinery before undertaking relevant work
• Undertake corrective actions within scope of authorisation

Experience/Qualification/Skills

• A strong appreciation and understanding of a safe working environment, hazard awareness and a compliant attitude
• Experience of landfill avoidance processes or similar (beneficial)
• Previous experience of overseeing and supervision of teams
• Maintenance and improvement techniques experience to achieve planned continuous improvement methods.
• Proven positive approach to managing safety and being responsible for the safety of others
• Good numeracy and verbal reasoning skills able to read electrical and engineering drawings.
• Previous exposure to modern manufacturing lean techniques would be an advantage.
• Evidence of having mentored work colleagues and supported familiarisation of new employees on working practices
• Previous experience and a recognised maintenance qualification.
• Possess or achieve a supervising safely qualification.
• Possess or gain a recognised supervisory management qualification.
• Further qualifications to be discussed and agreed if they add value to the job-holder’s ability to improve both his/hers or the department’s performance.

The shift pattern is quite unusual as the working hours are from 6am until 6.30pm and can fall on all days of the week and certainly will involve working both Saturdays and Sundays on certain weekends as part of the rota. Applicants used to working continental or Panama patters would have no problem with this pattern.

Pay will be 42 hours per week and is paid weekly.

Rate of Pay

£35,000.00 – £40,000.00 per year
